VCB Panel vs RMU: Choosing 11kV Switchgear

Two Different Jobs

A VCB panel is a metal clad switchgear cubicle with a draw-out vacuum circuit breaker, numerical protection relays, instrument transformers and a busbar chamber. It switches and protects a circuit and can interrupt full fault current.

A ring main unit is a compact, sealed assembly with load break switches on the ring ways and a fused or breaker tee-off. It switches load current and isolates cable sections; it is not a general-purpose protection device.

How to Choose

  • Incoming supply from the utility at 11kV or 33kV into a plant: VCB panel
  • Protection of a large transformer or motor at MV: VCB panel
  • A substation sitting on a distribution ring feeding one transformer: RMU
  • Urban network, industrial estate or campus where many substations sit on a ring: RMU at each substation, VCB panels at the source substation

Most industrial plants use both: VCB panels at the incoming substation and RMUs at distributed load centres.

Documentation to Insist On

For either, ask for type-test evidence to IEC 62271-200, routine test reports for the actual assembly, protection settings, and as-built drawings. See our VCB panel and medium voltage switchgear pages.
