Ring Main Unit (RMU) Explained: 630A 11kV Distribution

What a Ring Main Unit Does

A Ring Main Unit is compact medium voltage switchgear installed at a distribution substation on an 11kV ring. Two "ring ways" carry the incoming and outgoing ring cables, and a third "tee-off" way feeds the local distribution transformer. Because supply can arrive from either direction, a cable fault on one side is isolated while the substation keeps running from the other.

Standard 630A 11kV Configuration

  • Rated voltage: 11 kV (12 kV rated equipment)
  • Rated current: 630 A on the ring busbar and load break switches
  • Short circuit: 20 kA or 25 kA for 3 seconds
  • Ways: 2-way, 3-way, 4-way or 5-way, extensible
  • Tee-off: HRC fuse-switch combination for transformers up to about 1250 kVA, or a vacuum circuit breaker with a relay for larger or protection-critical feeders
  • Standard: IEC 62271-200

SF6 or Solid Dielectric?

SF6 gas insulated units are sealed for life, compact and long proven in the field. Solid dielectric and vacuum designs avoid greenhouse gas handling and are increasingly specified where environmental policy or client standards require it. Both meet IEC 62271-200; the choice is usually driven by client specification, space and lifecycle policy.

Fuse Tee-Off or Circuit Breaker Tee-Off

A fuse-switch combination is cheaper and fast-acting for small transformers, but a blown fuse means a site visit and a matched replacement set. A VCB tee-off with a numerical relay costs more but gives adjustable protection, remote operation and an event record — usually the right choice above roughly 1250 kVA or where the load is critical.

Specifying for SCADA

For feeder automation, ask for motorised actuators on the ring ways, fault passage indicators, an auxiliary supply arrangement (usually a small LV supply with battery backup) and an RTU interface. Specify this at order stage — retrofitting motorisation later is expensive.
