Ring Main Unit (RMU) — 630A, 11kV Medium Voltage Switchgear

A Ring Main Unit is the compact medium voltage switchgear that forms the backbone of an 11kV ring distribution network. PPT supplies 630A 11kV RMUs from OEM partners in 2-way to 5-way configurations, with load break switches on the ring ways and a fused or circuit-breaker tee-off for the transformer. The OEM builds and type-tests the RMU to IEC 62271-200 (internal arc classification, cable test facility and motorised operation options are per the OEM range); PPT engineers the selection and the LT side around it.

Frequently asked questions

What is a ring main unit used for?

An RMU connects a distribution substation into an 11kV ring so supply can be fed from either direction. The ring ways isolate a faulted cable section while the tee-off feeds the local distribution transformer.

What does a 630A 11kV RMU mean?

630A is the continuous current rating of the ring busbar and load break switches, and 11kV is the system voltage — the standard combination for urban and industrial 11kV distribution rings in India and most IEC markets.

SF6 or solid dielectric RMU — which should I choose?

SF6 units are compact, sealed for life and widely proven. Solid dielectric and vacuum units avoid greenhouse gas handling and are increasingly specified where environmental policy requires it. We supply both.

Can the RMU be integrated with SCADA?

Yes. Motorised actuators, fault passage indicators, an RTU interface and auxiliary supply arrangement can be supplied so the unit is remotely operable in a smart distribution network.
