Switchgear Comparison: Schneider vs ABB vs Siemens vs Lauritz Knudsen
Compare an approved device, not only a brand
Schneider Electric, ABB, Siemens and Lauritz Knudsen each offer multiple breaker, contactor and protection ranges. A valid comparison starts with the exact catalogue numbers and application duty. Brand-level statements cannot replace checking voltage, current, utilization category, breaking capacity and environmental derating.
Electrical criteria
Confirm prospective fault current and the device's declared breaking capacity at the system voltage. Review trip-unit functions and adjustment ranges, discrimination and cascading evidence, motor-duty utilization category, coil voltage and auxiliary-contact requirements. Coordination must use the manufacturer's published tables for the proposed device combination.
Integration and maintainability
Check meter and trip-unit communication protocols, gateway requirements, software availability and the points needed by the BMS or SCADA. Compare terminal access, withdrawable or fixed construction where relevant, spare availability and the plant team's familiarity. Consistency across a site may be worth more than a small purchase-price difference.
Procurement controls
Issue an approved-makes list with acceptable series and technical deviations. Require genuine traceable supply, current datasheets and final catalogue numbers in the BOM. If a substitution is proposed, repeat the coordination, thermal and mechanical checks rather than accepting “equivalent” based on frame size.
A practical selection record
Record the selected make and model, duty, rating basis, protection settings, coordination reference, accessories and communication interface on the approved drawings. PowerPanelTech supports project-specific approved makes including Schneider Electric, ABB, Siemens, Lauritz Knudsen and C&S Electric. Send the specification for review.
