Slip Ring Motor Starter Design: Rotor Resistance Selection
Slip Ring Motor Fundamentals
Slip ring (wound rotor) motors allow external resistance to be connected to the rotor circuit, enabling:
- Controlled starting with reduced current
- High starting torque
- Speed regulation
Rotor Resistance Starter Design
Key Parameters
- Rotor voltage (at standstill): Available from motor nameplate
- Rotor current (at full load): Calculate from motor rating
- Number of starting steps: Typically 3-5 steps
- Starting torque requirement: Usually 150-200% of full load torque
Resistance Calculation
Total rotor resistance per phase: R_total = V_rotor / (√3 × I_rotor_FL × desired starting current ratio)
Step Grading
Resistances are graded geometrically:
- Step 1 (maximum resistance): Full resistance
- Intermediate steps: R_n = R_total × (slip ratio)^n
- Final step: Short circuit (full speed)
Panel Components
- Rotor resistance grid (metallic/liquid)
- Step contactors (time-delayed or current-operated)
- Timer relays for step sequencing
- Rotor circuit protection
Applications
- Cement mills, crushers, conveyors
- Cranes and hoists
- Ball mills and heavy mixers
