Electrical Panel Commissioning Checklist
Control the documents first
Use approved as-built single-line diagrams, general arrangements, schematics, feeder schedules, protection settings and test procedures. Confirm the panel identification and revision match the installation. Record open deviations and assign responsibility before energization.
Visual and mechanical checks
- Inspect transit damage, enclosure alignment, barriers, labels and ingress seals.
- Verify busbar, earth bar and cable termination tightness using the approved torque values and method.
- Check clearances, cable support, gland plates, shutters and mechanical interlocks.
- Remove tools and debris, and confirm ventilation paths are unobstructed.
Electrical pre-energization checks
Isolate sensitive electronics where required by their instructions before insulation testing. Verify protective-conductor continuity, phase identification, control voltage, CT polarity and ratio, and wiring continuity. Confirm breaker and relay settings against the approved coordination study; never energize using unexplained factory defaults.
Functional tests
Test local and remote operation, indication, emergency stops, electrical and mechanical interlocks, permissives, trip circuits and communication points. For MCCs, prove each motor feeder's start/stop logic and overload response without bypassing safety inputs. For APFC panels, verify CT orientation, target power factor, stage sequence and discharge timing before automatic operation.
Energization and handover
Energize under the site's approved safety procedure. Record phase voltages, sequence, no-load and operating currents, abnormal sound or heating, meter readings and functional results. Close with signed test sheets, final settings, as-built drawings, backups and an outstanding-items register. Contact PowerPanelTech for panel engineering and commissioning support.
