MCC Panel Design Guide: Complete Engineering Reference
What is an MCC Panel?
A Motor Control Centre (MCC) is a centralized assembly of motor starters, protection devices, and associated control equipment used to control and protect electric motors in industrial plants.
Key Design Considerations
1. Motor Starter Selection
The starter type depends on motor HP rating:
- Up to 10 HP: Direct On-Line (DOL) starter
- 10-50 HP: Star-Delta starter (reduces starting current to 33%)
- 50-150 HP: Soft starter (controlled voltage ramp)
- Above 150 HP or variable speed: VFD (Variable Frequency Drive)
2. Protection Coordination
Each motor feeder requires:
- MCCB or MPCB for short circuit protection
- Contactor for switching
- Overload relay for thermal protection
- Control transformer for control circuit isolation
3. Busbar Sizing
Main busbars must be rated for:
- Sum of all motor full load currents with diversity factor
- Short circuit withstand (1 second rating)
- Temperature rise limits as per IS 8623
4. Panel Layout
Standard MCC configurations:
- Fixed type: Components mounted directly
- Semi-draw-out: Modules can be withdrawn for maintenance
- Fully draw-out: Complete isolation during maintenance
Engineering Standards
- IS 8623 / IEC 61439-1: Type-tested assemblies
- IS 3427: Degree of protection (IP rating)
- IS 13947: Switching and control devices
