IEC 61439 Compliance for Exported Switchboards

Design Verification vs Routine Verification

IEC 61439-1 splits proof of compliance in two. Design verification proves the assembly design — by testing, by comparison with a tested reference design, or by calculation. Routine verification is performed on every assembly built and shipped.

A manufacturer claiming "IEC 61439 compliant" should be able to show both: the design verification evidence for the family, and the routine verification record for your specific panel.

The Twelve Design Verification Items

Construction and materials, degree of protection, clearances and creepage, protection against electric shock and circuit continuity, incorporation of switching devices, internal circuits and connections, terminals for external conductors, dielectric properties, temperature rise limits, short circuit withstand, electromagnetic compatibility, and mechanical operation.

Temperature Rise Is Where Most Designs Fail

Verification by testing is definitive; verification by calculation is permitted within defined limits. Either way, the declared rated diversity factor and installation ambient must match how the panel will actually be used. A panel verified at 35°C and installed at 50°C is not verified for that site.

Short Circuit Withstand

The assembly must withstand the prospective fault current for the stated duration, or be protected by a device with proven let-through characteristics. Ask for the verified combination — breaker make, model and the assembly it was verified with. A substituted "equivalent" breaker invalidates the evidence.

Routine Verification on Every Panel

Inspection of the assembly including wiring and operational test, dielectric test, and verification of protective measures and continuity of the protective circuit. Every panel we ship carries this record.

What to Ask a Supplier For

  1. Design verification evidence for the specific enclosure and busbar system
  2. Routine test report bearing your panel's serial number
  3. Bill of materials with makes and catalogue numbers as built
  4. As-built schematics and general arrangement drawings

If a supplier cannot produce items 1 and 2, the compliance claim is not verifiable.
