Exporting Electrical Panels to the Middle East: Design Rules
Design Ambient Is the First Decision
Gulf projects are typically specified at 50°C design ambient, sometimes 55°C inside a plant room. Every current-carrying component has to be derated for that: busbars, circuit breakers, contactors and cables. A panel designed at 40°C and shipped to Riyadh will run hot and trip on thermal overload.
Practical measures: increase busbar cross-section, select breakers with a higher frame rating, add forced ventilation with filters or panel air conditioners for enclosed rooms, and increase compartment spacing.
Sand, Dust and Salt
- IP54 as a minimum indoors; IP55 to IP65 for outdoor or semi-outdoor locations
- Double-skin or sunshade roof for outdoor kiosks to cut solar gain
- Filtered forced ventilation, with filter change access from the front
- Marine-grade paint systems and stainless fasteners for coastal sites such as Jebel Ali, Dammam or Sohar
Standards and Approvals
Low voltage assemblies are built to IEC 61439-1 and 61439-2; medium voltage to IEC 62271-200. Many Gulf utilities add their own specification layer — DEWA, ADDC, SEC, KAHRAMAA and MEW each publish requirements for equipment connected to their networks. Share the applicable utility specification at the enquiry stage so component selection matches it from the start.
Documentation Buyers Expect
Routine test reports, type-test evidence for the design, general arrangement drawings, schematics, protection settings, bill of materials with makes and part numbers, and an operation and maintenance manual. Arabic-labelled summary documentation can be supplied on request.
Packing and Freight
Panels are shrink-wrapped with desiccant, bolted to skids and crated for sea freight from Mundra or Nhava Sheva, or air freighted for urgent requirements. Larger line-ups are split into shipping sections with joint kits and a documented site assembly procedure.
Lead Time
Typical export lead time is 4-8 weeks from drawing approval plus freight transit. Drawing approval is usually the slowest stage, so early submission of the single line diagram and load list saves the most time.
